Art & Copy

My favorite film from 2009 , Art and Copy is a must see film for everyone involved in the advertising realm. It will inspire you, make you laugh, make you think, make you cry (you wouldn’t cry at a movie about advertising, right? Wait to you see the Nike campaign), and it’ll make you understand why it is important to evoke these same feelings in your own audience for your next campaign.

Those who are lucky enough to be involved in this craft, have a great responsibility with society and history of human kind. It is preposterous to see horrible campaigns that go over and over without anyone questioning “why is this horrendous ad running?”  Well I guess that to some extend is because some “Ad People” have have forgotten about this responsibility. After watching Art & Copy, you will be reminded of it.

When you see the real life Mad Men like; George Lois, Phyllis K. Robinson, Mary Wells Lawrence, and many more, describe the process that took them to create some of the most compelling advertising campaigns in history, you’ll definitely be inspired to make things better, or it will help confirm your convictions about what good advertising should be.

For those who are not part of the advertising world, it still is a great movie to watch. The film makers did a great work on keeping it interesting for every member of the audience. Maybe this is because the campaigns shown in the film are so embedded on the communal psyche, that anyone can appreciate the genius and hard work put behind these ideas.

Unfortunately, this movie is not out in theaters everywhere, but there are sporadic screenings all over the world, this makes it even more exciting when you learn that a screening is coming near you. Lucky for us there will be two screenings of the film in Austin this month (the 17th and 21st) at The Alamo Ritz. Remember to buy your tickets with time, becasue back in November they sold out days before the screening.

More information can be found in the Art & Copy Movie Page, or at the Alamo Drafthouse page.
