For hundreds of years, initials have been used to set off the first letter of a chapter or paragraph. Using this and other classic technique add a distinctive style to stories and poems. These days they also stand alone as logos, but I guess in that case it wouldn’t be considered a drop cap but rather cool typography. Either way here are a few cool ones I ran across.
