AIGA SA Munny Maker

As graphic artists, San Antonio is not the first city you think of when seeking a career, you don’t expect to find great design or great companies to work with. This is a definitely not true, there is talent and a great deal of opportunities in this city.  Unfortunately the idea that San Antonio doesn’t have a strong creative community persist, and great designers go unappreciated and opportunities to generate great work are not fulfilled to it’s potential.

This is mostly for the lack of a design culture in San Antonio. The average San Antonian consumer doesn’t understand what it takes to generate great design. This is not for a lack of sophistication, but because they have not been exposed enough to the possibilities brought in by good design. This causes a devaluation of local design, despite being at the level of work created by internationally recognized agencies and studios. Local designers struggle to get the recognition and compensation they deserve for their hard work, due to this unawareness.

The creation on a AIGA chapter in San Antonio seeks to strengthen the design community in an attempt to help destroy the misconceptions to which San Antonio design has been subjected to, by generating discussion among the designers and agencies, educating the community on design issues and by bringing design related events. All of these activities have a price, and for that reason the AIGA San Antonio has organized The First Ever Munny Maker event to gather funds to formalize the chapter and generate interest in the organization.

So, what is this all about? Well, what other way to best show the power of the creative community than having designers flaunt their talents. The AIGA San Antonio has organized a silent auction of Munny toys specially created for this event by several designers, both local and well known international designers. Among the designers involved are; Joe Duffy, DJ Stout, James Victore, Sean Carnegie, Woddy Pirtle, Carlos Fernandez and Jason Limón. Munnies design by the Picoso Creative team members will be auction in the event as well. Many more perks will be auction too, like books, posters, among other cool stuff.

The event will take place at the FineSilver Building on August 14th at 7:00pm all the Munny toys will be displayed for auction during the event.  AIGA has also invited Brian Flynn from Hybrid Design and Super 7 to come talk about the design of toy characters, and how to develop this into a successful business. The event is going to be fun and inspiring, and of course, you get hang out with the cool San Antonio design community.

The awesome poster concept and design is by our very own Gabriel Estrada with creative direction by Rolando Murillo of Murillo Design and website design and developed is by the Picoso Creative team. We are always happy to participate in events like this, because we truly believe that there is great creative potential in this city, and we are proud to be part of it.

For more information you can visit the event’s website, for tickets in advance, or to purchase a Munny to participate, and for a sneak peak of the toys that are being auctioned off.
