This Sunday are the Grammys we are waiting to see who wins a very interesting category, Best Recording package, a category that recognizes one of my favorite things to design, album packaging art.
Today, everyone just downloads a song or an album, that “I NEED TO BUY THAT ALMUM!” feeling has slowly fade away. But I consider it very important to pay especial attention to the design of an album cover and its packaging. I think that it is really cool that this effort is recognized by the recording industry.
Last year the award went to Metallica for their album Death Magnetic, which I liked.. it was an interesting cover. I actually got to see it up close because my roommate bought it. Its always a complete different experience to see albums, and actually feel them, its something I really enjoy. I hope I get to see some of this year’s nominees up close, and the nominees are:

Brothers, The Black Keys
Michael Carney, art director

Eggs, Oh no Ono
Malene Mathiasson, Malthe Fischer, Kristoffer Rom, Nis Svoldgård & Aske Zidore, art directors

Hadestown, Anaïs Mitchell
Brian Grunert, Anaïs Mitchell, Peter Nevins, art directors

What Will We Be, Devendra Banhart
Devendra Banhart & Jon Beasley, art directors

Yonkers NY, Chip Taylor
Andrew Taray, art director
Also here are the nominees for Best Boxed of Special Limited Edition Package:

Light: On The South Side, Various Artists
Tom Lunt, Rob Sevier & Ken Shipley, art directors

Minotaur (Deluxe Edition), The Pixies
Jeff Anderson & Vaughan Oliver, art directors

A Sideman’s Journey (Limited Collector’s Super Deluxe Box Set),
Voormann & Friends
Daniel Reiss & Klaus Voormann, art directors

Story Island, Various Artist
Qing-Yang Xiao, art director

Under Great White Northern Lights (Limited Edition Box Set),
The White Stripes
Rob Jones & Jack White III, art directors
I think is going to go to The Black Keys this year, and as for boxed set, I’d Like it to go to Story Island, but it will probably be given to The White Stripes. It’d be interesting to know who judges this category, to see if its just members of the music industry or if they ask designers and art directors to help make this decision.
Anyway, which are your favorites?

GREAT POST!
